FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How Does An EV MOT Differ To An ICE MOT?

The biggest difference between an electric car MOT and an ICE car MOT is the omission of the engine and emissions test. Since your EV does not have an engine, it doesn’t release any nasty gases, so there is no need to test for them.

Do I Need To Take My Electric Car To A Specific Garage?

It is important that you check with the garage that they are equipped to work with EVs before you arrive at your electric car MOT. Mechanics should have a separate qualification in order to safely work with electric vehicles, as there are certain risks involved due to the dangers associated with electricity and wiring.
Our website will only show you local garages that are suitable for your electric car MOT when you enter an EV reg, so you can be sure you are taking your car to an appropriate garage.

Do Electric Cars Need An MOT?

Although there are plenty of differences between electric cars and their petrol and diesel counterparts, EVs still need a yearly MOT if the car is over three years old.
Naturally, the tests are different – for a start, your EV doesn’t have an engine, so the test is adapted to suit the electric car’s needs.
You don’t have to worry about any emissions tests with an electric car, and more time is spent ensuring your battery is in good condition. During your electric car’s MOT, the mechanic will also inspect your charging equipment and port for damage.
All other aspects that are the same on a petrol or diesel model, such as your brakes, wheels, lights and tyres, will be inspected in the same way.

What Other Maintenance Does An Electric Car Need?

There are other aspects of owning an electric car that you may need to take into consideration.
• Battery Maintenance – it is important that you look after your battery properly to ensure your vehicle passes its electric car MOT. It is recommended that you never allow the battery to run out completely and that it is always charged to between 20% and 80%.
• Brake Maintenance – EVs use regenerative braking, which means the energy which is lost when the car slows down is converted back into stored energy in the battery. This means your brake pads and discs will not have as much wear and tear. This doesn’t mean you won’t ever need to replace your electric car's brake pads or brake discs replaced, but you should be able to go longer between replacements.
• Tyres Maintenance – EVs weigh more than petrol or diesel cars due to the way they are produced and the materials they are made from. They also need to be able to cope with the additional accelerating power and create less noise. You should always keep on top of the air pressure and the tread depth and have them replaced accordingly.

How Much Does An Electric Car MOT Cost?

An electric car MOT costs the same as a petrol or diesel model, £54.85. By using BookMyGarage, you can compare the price of electric car MOTs in your local area so you can save money.

What Does An Electric Car MOT Include?

Seats & Seat Belts Warning Lights Switches (position lamp, headlights, hazard lights) Windscreen Condition, Wipers & Washers Brake Controls Steering Wheel & Column Doors, Mirrors & Horn
Licence Plates Lights & Licence Plate Lights Indicators & Hazard Lights Headlights & Aim Brake Lights, Fog Lights & Reflectors Wheels & Tyres Shock Absorbers
Mirrors & Wiper Blades Boot Lid, Loading Doors, Bonnet Towbars
(if applicable) Bodywork Condition Chassis Brake System Wheel Bearings
Speed Limiter (if applicable) Steering & Power Steering Components Suspension Components Drive Shafts (if applicable)

Does a Leased Electric Car Need An MOT?

You will still need to take your car for an MOT if you lease it rather than own it outright. It is worth checking with the lease provider if they require you to have the electric car MOT at a specific garage, and ensure they approve of the MOT centre you choose.
If you don’t check, you risk having to pay for a second MOT test at an approved centre.
