Driving in Waltham Forest

Waltham Forest is an outer London borough in the north east of the capital with built-up urban districts in the south with inner-city characteristics, and more affluent residential areas in the north with a variety of parks and greenspace including sections of Epping Forest.

The delights of London Town are close by but there are a number of attractions worth seeing in the borough. One such highlight is the William Morris Gallery on Forest Road, Walthamstow. Located in the former childhood home of William Morris, a founder of the Arts and Crafts Movement, the Gallery exhibits feature tapestry, wallpaper, furniture and tiles as well as objects from other Arts and Crafts luminaries and Grayson Perry’s Walthamstow Tapestry. Next door on the corner of Forest Road and the A503 is the Waltham Forest Town Hall – a great example of stripped classical 20th century architecture designed by PD Hepworth. The attached assembly rooms of this Grade II listed host classical concerts by world class musicians.

The Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge won Londonist’s ‘museum of the month’ a while back and is another attraction worth a visit and one of the few timber-framed buildings surviving in the area. Due in part to the Arts and Crafts legacy, there is an established artists’ community in Waltham Forest, and the annual E17 Art Trail, which includes open studios, exhibitions and events, is the biggest art event in the borough.

For food, drink and entertainment the Nag's Head is considered one of the best pubs by locals with jazz on a Sunday, real ales and good Italian food.

Drive to Waltham Forest via the A406 or the North Circular ring road which connects central London to the outer suburbs. The A12 passes through the town centre but is considered one of the worst roads in the capital and is often heavily congested, particularly along Lee Bridge Road. Traffic calming and 20mph speed zones are to be put in place as part of the Mini Holland scheme, following a £27 million award from Transport for London. This is aimed at encouraging cyclists and walkers and reducing the high pollution levels in the area.
